What's on 9231 Paper 3: Further Mechanics?

Further Mechanics is a 1h 30min paper worth 50 marks, made up of the 6 syllabus areas below. Further Mechanics is one of the two applied options; it can count toward either the AS Level or the full A Level.

1

Motion of a projectile

Modelling projectile motion and finding range, greatest height and the equation of the path.

2

Equilibrium of a rigid body

Moments, the centre of mass, and a rigid body resting in equilibrium.

3

Circular motion

Motion in a horizontal or vertical circle and the forces involved.

4

Hooke's law

Elastic strings and springs, tension, and elastic potential energy.

5

Linear motion under a variable force

Using calculus when the force, and so the acceleration, varies with time or position.

6

Momentum

Impulse, and the direct and oblique impact of particles, including the coefficient of restitution.

AS Level or A Level? AS & A Level

Further Mechanics is one of the two applied options. With Further Pure Mathematics 1 it forms an AS Level, and it can also count toward the full A Level.

How to revise with Further Mechanics past papers

Work through one component at a time

Doing five years of Further Mechanics back-to-back trains the specific question styles and topic weighting of this one paper far better than jumping between components. Patterns repeat - you will start to recognise them.

Time yourself at 1h 30min

Sit each paper at the real duration. Pacing is a skill in itself, and Further Mechanics rewards finishing every question with time to check.

Mark with the matching scheme

Self-mark with the mark scheme for the same session and variant. Note where you lost method marks versus accuracy marks - they need different fixes.

Practise across variants

Variants 1, 2 and 3 test the same syllabus at equivalent difficulty. Working all three for a year gives you three fresh sittings of the same paper.

9231 Paper 3 — Frequently asked questions

What topics are on 9231 Paper 3 (Further Mechanics)?
Cambridge A-Level Further Mechanics covers motion of a projectile, equilibrium of a rigid body, circular motion, Hooke's law, linear motion under a variable force, and momentum. The paper is 1h 30min long and worth 50 marks.
What is the difference between the 9231/31, /32 and /33 variants?
The second digit is the variant (time zone). Cambridge issues variants 1, 2 and 3 of each paper so the exam can be sat safely across the world's time zones without leaks. All variants test the same syllabus content at equivalent difficulty, with grade thresholds calibrated afterwards. Practising any variant is equally valuable.
Where can I get the mark schemes for Further Mechanics?
Every session listed above links to both the question paper and its mark scheme, free to download. Cambridge typically releases mark schemes around 6-8 weeks after results day.
