Pure Mathematics 2 is a 1h 15min paper worth 50 marks, made up of the 6 syllabus areas below. Pure Mathematics 2 is the pure paper for AS-Level candidates who are not continuing to the full A Level. Its content is a subset of Pure Mathematics 3.
Algebra
The modulus (absolute value) function, and the factor and remainder theorems for polynomials.
Logarithms and exponentials
The laws of logarithms, the number e, and using logs to solve equations.
Trigonometry
The secant, cosecant and cotangent ratios, further identities, and the R sin(x + a) form.
Differentiation
The chain, product and quotient rules, and differentiating exponentials, logs and trig functions.
Integration
Integrating exponentials, 1/x and trig functions, and the trapezium rule.
Numerical solution of equations
Locating roots and solving equations by iteration.
AS Level or A Level? AS Level only
Pure Mathematics 2 is for AS Level only: with Paper 1 it forms the "Pure Mathematics only" AS route. A Level candidates take Paper 3 instead, and no candidate may sit both Paper 2 and Paper 3 in the same series.
Centres choose the component combination - if you are unsure which papers your route needs, check with your school's exams officer.
When is this paper next sat?
Cambridge examines A-Level Mathematics in the June and October/November series each year (with a February/March series in some countries). The next sitting is the October/November 2026 series.

Work through one component at a time

Sit each paper at the real duration. Pacing is a skill in itself, and Pure Mathematics 2 rewards finishing every question with time to check.
Mark with the matching scheme

Practise across variants
