The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is the admissions test used by Cambridge, Imperial and other universities for engineering and science courses. It is fast and multiple-choice: the challenge is doing multi-step reasoning under time pressure. These are original practice questions written to that style - each one has a fully worked solution and notes on the common mistakes. Pick an answer, hit Check, and the worked solution opens up.

30 free questions, arranged as a difficulty arc: easy warm-ups first, then genuine exam-hard problems at the end. Switch modules with the tabs below.

Electricity
A resistor of 6 Ω6\ \Omega carries a current of 2 A2\text{ A}. What is the potential difference across it?
Magnetism
A long straight wire carries a steady current. Which statement best describes the magnetic field produced around the wire?
Mechanics
A car accelerates uniformly from rest to 20 m/s20\text{ m/s} in 8 s8\text{ s}. What is its acceleration?
GraphGraph with axes t / s and v / m s⁻¹. 82020 m/st / sv / m s⁻¹
Electricity
A 4 Ω4\ \Omega resistor and a 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor are connected in parallel. What is their combined resistance?
Circuit diagramCircuit: supply with (4 Ω ∥ 6 Ω). 4 Ω6 ΩFind: combined resistance
Transformers
An ideal transformer steps 12 V12 \text{ V} up to 60 V60 \text{ V}. The current in the secondary coil is 2 A2 \text{ A}. What is the current in the primary coil?
Mechanics
A car travels at a constant 15 m/s15\text{ m/s} for 4 s4\text{ s}, then decelerates uniformly to rest over the next 6 s6\text{ s}. What total distance does it travel?
GraphGraph with axes t / s and v / m s⁻¹. 41015t / sv / m s⁻¹
Heat capacity
A 2.0 kg2.0\text{ kg} metal block is released from rest and slides down a rough slope, descending a vertical height of 3.0 m3.0\text{ m}. It reaches the bottom moving at 6.0 m s16.0\text{ m s}^{-1}. All the energy lost to friction is retained as heat in the block, whose specific heat capacity is 500 J kg1C1500\text{ J kg}^{-1}\,^{\circ}\text{C}^{-1}. Take g=10 N kg1g = 10\text{ N kg}^{-1}. By how much does the block's temperature rise?
Mass and weight
A skydiver of mass 80 kg80\text{ kg} reaches a terminal velocity of 40 m s140\text{ m s}^{-1} in a dive where the air-resistance force is proportional to the **square** of the speed, F=kv2F = kv^2. Taking g=10 m s2g = 10\text{ m s}^{-2}, what is the skydiver's **acceleration** at the moment her speed is 20 m s120\text{ m s}^{-1}?
Pressure
A sealed flask stands on a bench. Its base is a flat horizontal disc of area 0.030 m20.030\text{ m}^2, but the flask narrows to a thin neck above the base, so it holds only 0.018 m30.018\text{ m}^3 of water. The water reaches a height of 1.2 m1.2\text{ m} above the base.\n\nTaking the density of water as 1000 kg/m31000\text{ kg/m}^3, g=10 N/kgg = 10\text{ N/kg}, and ignoring atmospheric pressure, what is the size of the force the water exerts on the flat base?
Energy
A small run-of-river hydroelectric station takes water from a reservoir and lets it fall through a vertical drop of h=50 mh = 50\text{ m} before it passes through the turbine. Water flows through the turbine at a steady rate of 3 m33\text{ m}^3 per second. The generating system converts 80%80\% of the gravitational potential energy lost by the water into electrical energy.\n\nTaking g=10 N/kgg = 10\text{ N/kg} and the density of water as 1000 kg/m31000\text{ kg/m}^3, what is the electrical power output of the station?
